Expanding Surgical Services: A Successful Outreach Program by MAS Members

The Maldives Association of Surgeons (MAS) proudly celebrates the success of a remarkable Surgical Outreach Program recently conducted at Dr Abdul Samad Memorial Hospital (ASMH). This initiative brought together a distinguished team of MAS members, representing a wide range of surgical specialities, to provide much-needed surgical care and strengthen healthcare services in the regional Maldives.

Led by the Surgery Team from Male’ City Group of Hospitals (MCGH), the outreach was made possible with the strong collaboration and support of the Ministry of Health. We acknowledge the key role played by the Director General of Health Services, with the unwavering support of the Honourable Minister of Health, State Ministers, and Deputy Ministers. Their leadership and presence alongside the team were instrumental in the program’s success.

We also extend our gratitude to the leadership of MCGH — the CEO, Deputy CEOs, Medical Director, and the Major OT team — for their critical role in facilitating and supporting this outreach. A special thanks to the management and staff of Dr Abdul Samad Memorial Hospital for their tireless dedication and hospitality. Their teamwork and commitment ensured the smooth execution of surgical activities throughout the program.

The Surgical and Anaesthesia team members who participated in this outreach, all valued MAS members, include:

  • Dr. Mohamed Shifan, Senior Consultant Subspecialist in Onco-Surgery
  • Dr. Mohamed Waheed, Consultant Subspecialist in Plastic Surgery
  • Dr. Abdulla Adsar, Consultant Subspecialist in Urology
  • Dr. Ali Aafee, Consultant Subspecialist in Neurosurgery
  • Dr. Aishath Azna Ali, Consultant Subspecialist in Surgical Gastroenterology and Bariatric Surgery
  • Dr. Ibrahim Adil, Consultant in General Surgery
  • Dr. Asadh Shaheed, Consultant in Anesthesiology and Specialist in Pain Management

Their expertise and dedication made a significant impact, delivering high-quality surgical and perioperative services to the community and enhancing the capacity of local healthcare teams.

This successful outreach embodies the mission of the Maldives Association of Surgeons — to promote excellence in surgical care, foster collaboration among surgeons, and extend specialised services to all regions of the country. We look forward to continuing this spirit of service through future outreach programs, replicating this success across other regional hospitals, and ensuring equitable access to surgical care for all Maldivians.

Congratulations to all the members and institutions involved. Your contribution is an inspiring example of teamwork, professionalism, and dedication to the nation’s health.
